Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is a safe, noninvasive treatment that is used to reverse signs of skin damage caused by sun exposure. IPL treatment is beneficial in cases of:
IPL is safe to use on the face, neck, chest, and hands to produce fresher, more youthful-looking skin and reverse signs of sun damage. The intensity of the pulsed light is customized based on your skin tone and particular skin concerns so you get a personalized treatment to address your specific needs.
Using the IPL wand, the doctors pulse light waves that deliver specific amounts of energy to your skin. Cells in your skin — including hemoglobin, water, and melanin — absorb the light and respond by breaking down darkened pigments in your skin. This reduces brown spots, age spots, and signs of redness associated with rosacea and broken blood vessels.
For your IPL procedure, you arrive at the office with untanned skin. You apply an anesthetic cream 30-60 minutes before the session — either at home or in the office — in order to prevent discomfort during the procedure.
Your doctor then cleanses your skin and applies a cooling gel to the treatment area. You wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the pulsed light. Once you’re comfortable, your doctor uses the IPL handheld wand to pulse light over your skin. During the procedure, you may feel a mild stinging sensation — like a small rubber band snapping against your skin. The entire sessions last 20-30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
After your IPL session, you may notice redness or pinpoint bruising at the treatment site for a few days. Your dark spots may also get darker, but they will peel off within three to four days. You can wear makeup immediately after IPL treatment if you choose.
For the next week, the doctors recommend that you use a sensitive skin cleanser and moisturizer in addition to sunscreen to protect your skin. After a week, your skin will be less sensitive, though daily sunscreen application is recommended.
Your doctors may recommend a series of three to six sessions to see the best results. After your treatment is complete, you’ll notice brighter, younger-looking skin with a more even complexion. They may recommend touch-up visits every year to maintain your results.
